My daughter bought the Petmate LeBistro feeder at the pet store for her cat, and the cat defeated it the first day ... learned how to stick his paw up the chute and dispense as much food as he wanted. She was also concerned that the cat might be able to tip the whole feeder over or get the lid off which wasn't that securely attached. So the LeBistro went back to the pet store.
I found this AF-100 electronic feeder at Amazon sold by TopSeller100 for the same price my daughter paid for the LeBistro. I ordered it for my cat to see if it would work any better than the LeBistro. My cat has been using for it a month now and it works perfectly. It is larger, heavier and more stable than the LeBistro. My 14 pound cat would not be able to tip it over. The barrel feeding mechanism closes off at the chute and it is not possible for the cat to dispense extra food. The lid has a positive locking latch that will not come off. Today I ordered another AF-100 feeder to give to my daughter for her cat. I know she will be pleased with it.
My cat is very skittish so I was somewhat worried that the loud vibration and motor noise would scare him off. It did startle him at first, but he got accustomed to it after a couple of feedings. He seems to like the recording of my voice that plays when it dispenses.
The programming of the unit is not intuitive, so you have to carefully read the instructions and follow them exactly. If you miss a step, you have to reset it and start over. Once you have it programmed you can forget about it until it is time to change the batteries which will cause a reset and require reprogramming. I have not had to replace the batteries yet, but I know I will need to refer to the instructions when that happens because I won't remember the rather complex procedure.
You can program the unit to feed 1 to 4 times per day at the times you select. You can also force it to do an extra feeding on demand with the press of a button. The manual extra feeding cycle does not alter or cancel the programmed feeding times.
The unit can dispense from 1/4 cup to 2 1/2 cups per feeding in increments of 1/4 cup. I use Iams original cat food and I found that the small Iams pellets pack together so the 1/4 cup minumum feeding is more like 1/3 cup. But 1/3 cup is the portion size I give my cat so it works out OK. I think pet food varieties like dog food with larger pellets would probably dispense more accurately in the 1/4 cup increments as the literature indicates.
The hopper is very large. A 7 pound bag of Iams does not fill it up. When the unit dispenses, it vibrates the base of the chute to help the food fall into the barrel opening. When the food in the hopper gets low (down to 1 1/2 or 2 pounds)it piles up towards the back of the hopper and the vibrator doesn't always shake enough food down into the opening to dispense a full feeding. You can open the lid and push the food forward, and it will dispense correctly for several more feedings before it piles up at the back of the hopper again. If you are going to leave the feeder unattended for several days, you will want to make sure you have ample food in the hopper so it will not get low enough to cause the short feedings.
The AF-100 feeder from TopSeller100 is sold without branding, but it comes packaged in a professional factory box with full markings and instructions. From everything I can find through online research it appears to be the exact same item sold under a brand name for about $30 more. I highly recommend this item.
